Park(ing) Day Sligo 2017 sees the launch of our first Parklet in Sligo town. The Shelly Streets Parklet will be open to the public on Friday 15th September for the afternoon and will remain open to the public for a number of weeks. The Parklet will be a miniature public park occupying a kerbside position outside the Yeats' Building at Hyde Bridge, open to everyone.

In addition to eight parking spaces transformed into mini-parks for public enjoyment and entertainment, the new Shelly Streets Parklet, which will be formally launched by Cllr Sinead Maguire at 5pm on Culture Night, 22 September, will further challenge how we view and engage with our streetscapes, and our city centres.  Passers-by are welcome to experience these unique ephemeral space that has been created for their enjoyment, and to take a break, relax, have fun, and make new friends, while re-thinking how we view our urban environment.

PARK(ing) Day Sligo will provide new opportunities for social interaction and critical and creative thinking, while attracting more people out of their cars and onto the streets of our city.

According to organiser Gillian Ni Chaiside of Faoin Aer Landscape Architecture,

“For the third year, PARK(ing) Day Sligo will again bring colour and creativity to the streets of Sligo, inviting us all to think about our public space and how we might use it more rewardingly. We are excited to announce that in collaboration with Sligo County Council we will carve out a little more space for people in the town by creating a miniature Park (Parklet) outside the beautiful Yeats Building on Hyde Bridge.

We hope this relaxed urban breathing space will allow people the freedom to consider how they might use their urban spaces in Sligo. The Parklet project is intended to give the public a unique opportunity to think about how they might prefer to experience their town. I think Sligo will seize this opportunity and reconsider their public spaces together and create a more open, inclusive and welcoming pubic realm for locals and visitors alike".
