About Faoin Aer

From our vibrant studios on Sligo Atlantic Coast, we design and realise landscapes that are refined, elegant and playful expressions of the places our clients ask us to re-imagine with them.   Faoin Aer works closely with Clients to create a highly personal and practical outdoor space, unique to the needs, hopes and future enjoyment of the place.   At Faoin Aer, we pride ourselves in providing an approachable, professional and fun experience to all the work we undertake.  We create the Landscape or Garden you, the Client, want to have, that is functional for your particular requirements, and brings you joy.

We will work with you from concept stage, through design, tender stage and beyond as required. The work varies from consultation on public realm projects, private client developments, private garden design, and ongoing public open space explorations.

Ours is a collaborative studio, practicing through engagement with fellow professionals, private clients and various community and school groups particular to a landscape or garden project.  Activating quiet or underused spaces within the public realm, through collaborative engagements and tactical actions, is also central to Faoin Aer’s mission to ensure streets are places for people and nature to coexist symbiotically in our towns and cities.

Each of our Landscape and Garden Designs is anchored in the environment surrounding your location.  This gives the work a sense of authenticity and longevity.   We only use sustainable design practices which future proof your landscape.   Practices include built in rain water harvesting, carefully selected planting that will thrive in a practical site and, most importantly,  taking note of your prevailing weather conditions so that your realised vision thrives from season to season and year to year.

Director of Faoin Aer, Gillian Ní Chaiside, brings a particularly creative and holistic approach to landscape design.

She explains how she works to explore the needs of clients.  'An air of fun and free adventure is ever-present in these explorations and indeed the studio work throughout, which allows us to create spaces which are inviting, intriguing and valuable to all users.'

About Gillian

Gillian holds an Honours degree in Environmental Design from Dublin Institute of Technology, and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from University College Dublin. Having  worked in theatre and film production design for many years, she has a rich knowledge of cultural, social and living history which, combined with her passion for travel, inform a deep appreciation of difference in the built, cultural and horticultural heritage from place to place. These valuable observations are applied in her work, to inform and reveal what is unique in each place that Clients entrust to her.

Commisioning a landscape is no different to commissioning a work of art or a piece is music- it is a sensitive, erudite process, not a commodity’.
